Two Engagement Rings
Become

a crescent Moon Heirloom

for her Daughter

These two diamond engagement rings lived in the family jewelry box for too long.  They both are promised to her daughter, to use how she sees fit.  Still, having them sit there seemed like a waste.  Instead of giving her daughter diamonds to use in the future, my client wanted to make a gift of the rings now.  She struck upon the notion of a star & moon theme, and asked if I could fabricate something along those lines using just the material in the two gold rings.  That way at least they could be worn until another purpose came along for them.

I dismantled the rings, and bulked up some of the worn prongs holding one of the diamonds.  After constructing a crescent moon using gold from the ring shanks, I secured the petite diamond near the bottom.  The larger diamond seemed an obvious choice to position as the star, especially in its six prongs of twinkling white gold.

Using the remaining yellow gold from the ring shanks I built a bail for the chain to pass through at the top of the moon.  The front of the bail also swoops down and into the arc of the moon to position the star diamond.  The resulting pendant is playful and airy in design, and plenty sturdy given the stock it was built from.

This transformation made for a nice Christmas surprise, in addition to moving these diamonds down the family tree.  Perhaps the pendant will live on and be passed down, or maybe it will be the catalyst for a new chapter in the lives of these diamonds.  Either way, they aren’t unused engagement rings sitting in a jewelry box anymore!
